Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings Recipe

This is easy to make and full of old fashioned goodness with delicious flat rolled dumplings made from scratch.  Chicken and dumplings are a classic American comfort food. This Southern-style chicken and dumplings is made.

  • 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 small white onion diced
  • 3 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2-3 tablespoons cornstarch


  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup milk or buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

How To Prepare

  1. Place chicken breasts into the bottom of a 6 to 8 quart slow cooker. Top with onion and garlic and season with salt and pepper. Pour in chicken broth,
  2. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours, or high for 3 hours. Shred chicken with a fork.
  3. Whisk cornstarch into milk. Pour mixture into crockpot and stir to combine.
  4. Make the dumplings by whisking together flour, baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl. Slowly pour in milk and butter and stir to combine into a dough. Roll out on a lightly floured countertop until it’s 1/8th inch thick. and cut into 1 inch by 1/2 inch strips.
  5. Transfer dumpling strips into the slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour, until dumplings are cooked through. Serve hot.
